Every so often, I desire a fresh start in my work. While I do consider myself a colorist, and this is mostly accomplished through the use of palettes that are life-giving, this collection is one of my times of evaluation. Not a “stepping away” from my love of energized colors, but an introduction of a softer, more thoughtful step forward. That “still small voice” which realigns me with my love of life and beauty, memories and philosophies. That deepest breath of understanding.

This collection illuminates even deeper color and light into my faith-centric vision of life. As an artist who strives to see beyond the ordinary, I consider my eyes like jewels — they are colored by my faith, and have an inherent, translucent structure that allows light to pass through, further magnifying the beauty, truth and Heaven I experience both outwardly and inwardly. And jewels are often multi-faceted, which I liken to the many opportunities I have been given to see life from other points of perspective and thinking. The ever-changing sparkle of a jewel is, to me, further indication that my faith is not a one-note song, but always moving, evolving and unique each day.

2018

So much of my faith and values are formed during quiet times of reflection. Each day is a new chance to further the goodness we can offer the world. Life can become complex, but there are foundational components that support all the rest of what is good. In this collection, I wanted to share even just a few of them that I focus on in my daily efforts to be the best person possible. My own prayer is that by doing the work in my own self, I can impact and lift another life out there to know these things as well.

This collection taps into my ongoing exploration of how I interpret Heaven, and is perhaps one of the most direct indictors of my faith and how Heaven is illuminated in myself as well as humanity, and more significantly in how greater things than us always conspire to lead us where we need to go, helping us in our endeavors of wholeness.

Ahhhh, childhood summers. Nothing beats the colors, sounds, and smells of water and sun, popsicles and laughter. This collection is a color study of my fond memories as a little girl by the beach and pool with family and friends.

I’ve always believed in the importance of introspection, personally and professionally. During this time in my creative practice, I decided to slow down, take a breath, and really understand myself more fully so that I could embark again later with a renewed understanding of life. This collection is lighter in count, which speaks to the gift of releasing our grip on excess.

Color holds a central voice in most of my work. However, just prior to the collection “The Interior” (where I turned inward and was rewarded with gifts beyond compare), this particular collection sets out to remove the color as the vehicle. The reliance for story-telling then rests upon the emotion of the markings and movement in a foundational, almost historic way. It was a self-induced exercise to “clean the palette” for my art making, with the results being a richness that brings definition and relief.

These little minis represent specific times in my life that left a positive impression upon me as an artist. They are not random, but tie together to form a storyline that prompted me to make this collection. The moments are specific, indelible, and private. However, the experiential aspect is something that others can likely recall throughout their own lives, so it widens my private story to include all.

This collection represents the culmination of my affair with “the beautiful”. All of life is a love story to me, and this was illuminated to me when I was a little girl. My eyes eternally set upon the depth of the genuinely beautiful. At a young age, I translated this through nature. As an adult, and during the making of this collection, I was brought back into the wonderment and beauty that the natural world presents us, always reminding me of the source of it all.

2014

Be vigilant for freedom. Not one of us is less deserving of it — internal or external, or both. Sometimes difficulties are self-induced, but in the end we are given the opportunity to reconcile, forgive, and find our freedom again. Nothing is wasted!

This small collection was a self-experiment, and all pieces were created entirely using my left hand (I’m naturally inclined to use my right hand when painting, although I do switch back and forth). All the mixing of paints, composition and mark-making. It wasn’t easy at first! The exercise of self-induced difficulty was useful to me in many ways, not the least of which I realized that I can break the chains of unnecessary struggle as soon as I believe I could still create through the impediment. I reconciled with the knowledge that my self-induced “suffering” does in fact have a place, as long as I break free when the lessons have been learned.

Life is eternal, and I believe in living with this always upon our heart and mind. Everything is connected, everything matters. The fruits of our efforts here on earth reach beyond just the here and now. This collection reveals my belief system, which acts as my internal compass — each choice I make impacts everything. It doesn’t cause me to be afraid of mistakes, it simply illuminates the ways I can improve each day so that I am making the right impact for the sake of eternity.

There is a very linear aspect in this collection. From the initial digging, working in the debris to sort “stuff” out, then the desire for a better life and a new self come to the forefront, but this means that the truths about past sorrows are also revealed. Eventually, the journey arrives where things are clear again and I am filled with life and love.
